Lino Printing Workshop with Bess Ma

SUNDAY, 31 MARCH, 2024, 4-7pm

This printmaking workshop will walk you through the process of creating a print from start to finish. From sketching to carving and inking to printing, you will leave this workshop with the ability to create your own prints at home. All necessary materials will be provided, and participants will leave the workshop with their very own carved block and a series of prints.

Linocut or lino print is a form of relief printmaking using linoleum or other synthetic materials as a base block. The block is then inked and pressed on to a surface to create reproductions; this process can be done either by hand or with a printing press. Linocut is a generally more accessible form of block printing (as opposed to woodblock techniques), but has been used extensively by modernist artists such as Picasso and Matisse.

Bess Ma (she/her), otherwise known as @printsbybees, is a Toronto based artist and maker. She received her BA and MARC from the University of Toronto in 2021. In 2019, she began her printmaking journey with a single mushroom print and subsequently launched her Etsy store in 2021. Inspired by all things flora and fauna, the arcane and mythological, she draws on her architectural background to weave together the mundane and fantastical.
